Hey, it looks like Sapporo has a baseball team again! The Ham Fighters are now at Sapporo Dome, with fresh new astroturf to boot! This may sound random in a weblog that often focuses on Pakistani pop culture, but it's not. Y'see, back when I was absolutely convinced that I would take a job in Hokkaido, the one thing I lamented was that there was no baseball team. And now, glory of glories, there is!
For those perplexed about a team called 'Ham Fighters', let me explain. Baseball teams in Japan are owned by corporations rather than cities. Thus, when the Nippon Ham company came into ownership of a team, they dubbed it the 'Nippon Ham Fighters'. And if that's not a cool name, I don't know what is.
I should be sleeping, but instead I'm puttering around Hokkaido-related sites. I still haven't given up my dream of moving there, maybe to do a masters in Northern Cultures or work in some capacity. Check out Kankohokkaido. Especially see the section on Otaru. See where it talks about the herring mansion? (It's the red building in the picture.) I unwittingly had dinner with the old man who lives there and a couple of his friends. Cool, eh?
